Headstrong, brash, confident, and complex, the MacLarens of Fire Mountain will captivate you with strong characters set in the wild and rugged western frontier.
Handsome, ruthless, young U.S. Marshal Jamie MacLaren had lost everything—his parents, his family connections, and his childhood sweetheart—but now he’s back in Fire Mountain and ready for another chance. Just as he successfully reconnects with his family and starts to rebuild his life, he gets the unexpected and unwanted assignment of rescuing the woman who broke his heart.
Beautiful, wealthy Victoria Wicklin chose money and power over love, but is now fighting for her life—or is she? Who has she become in the seven years since she left Fire Mountain to take up her life in San Francisco? Is she really as innocent as she says?
Marshal MacLaren struggles to learn the truth and do his job, but the past and present lead him in different directions as his heart and brain wage battle. Is Victoria a victim or a villain? Is life offering him another chance, or just another heartbreak?
As Jamie and Victoria struggle to uncover past secrets and come to grips with their shared passion, another danger arises. A life-altering danger that is out of their control and threatens to destroy any chance for a shared future.
Book Excerpt
“Tell me, Victoria. Why did you leave if it wasn’t for the money?” His voice was a whisper across her face. She could almost smell the anger pulsing from him, along with all the other familiar scents of the man she’d always loved. He was just as intoxicating now, just as impossible to resist.
She lifted her face to his to look into eyes that had turned a deep steel grey. She could lose herself in those eyes. It was her last coherent thought as his mouth moved towards hers inch-by-inch, brushing across her lips, and coaxing them to open for him. When she didn’t resist Jamie moved one arm to the back of her neck, holding her in place while his other arm moved to her back, pressing her to him. Her arms slid up and around his neck, pulling his head down to hers. His mouth moved to her eyes, traveled across her checks and down her neck, before settling again on her parted lips.
Jamie was amazed at how the taste and feel of Victoria in his arms hadn’t changed. She was still the most desirable woman he’d ever known. No matter what else had transpired, his body still craved hers as it had none other.

Ms. Davies is a new author to me. I read the first book in this series and now, after reading this book, I am sad to say that I find her plotting and character development to be formulaic and rather predictable. Clearly she has a loyal fan base but I do not understand the 4- and 5-star reviews. On a positive note, I liked Jamie's character much better than his older brother Niall, who was one of the most detestable heros I have ever met in a book. But I digress. Back to why I just couldn't like this book.
This book was chock full of keeping secrets, failures to communicate, misunderstandings, stupid assumptions with no facts to back them up and lies to each other. And then it is topped off by a very rushed ending/tying up loose ends, although I did appreciate the epilogue. All of which is exceedingly frustrating to me. It feels to me as if the author purposely writes the main characters to be at cross-purposes until the very end. I hate being drug around like that through an entire book! To me, it is a very lazy way of writing and it feels very stagnant. I want more substance, not just page after page of all of the things I listed. I also cannot stand the characters' incessant internal dialogue either.
Anyway, for what it's worth, I wouldn't recommend this book and I won't be reading anymore of her books.

Faster Than The Rest MacLarens of Fire Mountain Book 2 edition by Shirleen Davies Romance eBooks Reviews
Wedding Bells were in the future for the loving couple. Until an unknown third party took her innocence and threatened her family. Seven years later things changed as they will sometimes . She was kidnapped by a man her worthless husband was dead and she felt she was finally free to live her life. Little did she know things would change again. Read this book to find out about all the twists and turns end.
U.S. Marshall Jamie MacLaren is requested to track down Victoria Wicklin, the woman he loved seven years ago and was to marry. The same woman who left him and married some rich guy. The same woman who has been kidnapped by Miguel Hagan, a ruthless murderer. Jamie won't admit that he still loves Victoria and he is bitter over the way she treated him. But Victoria had her reasons for what she did and she still loves Jamie. Their hidden love takes a beating when they meet again; Jamie is withdrawn and Victoria is afraid to be around him and then angry over Jamie's treatment of her when he does come around. Even though Victoria plans to never return to her husband and plans a divorce, misunderstandings between she and Jamie, plus a suspected murder charge lodged against Victoria only furthers to make Jamie wonder if he really ever knew Victoria. I recommend this book as well as "Tougher Than The Rest", another book by SD that tells the story of Niall, Jamie's older brother.
Happening a year after 'Tougher Than the Rest', we follow Jamie and his conflicts of the heart when he rescues an old flame who left him once for a man with money. Things quickly get more complicated than that and soon nothing is as it seems, or safe.
As one of the four brothers of the 'MacLarens of Fire Mountain' series, Jamie gains a great deal of discipline in becoming a U.S. Marshal after becoming troubled for a while after his heart is broken. When the law comes after Victoria, this creates a lot of conflict. He was a great character to see on his own, and is now my favourite of the brothers. Victoria was a really strong heroine as well, likely from her past experiences that are nothing short of cruel and cold. Despite being the lady in distress, she keeps her head high and her focus on dealing with and moving past her troubles.
'Faster Than the Rest' is a great western romance read for those who enjoy realistic and complex characters, whether you're continuing from the previous book or reading it as a standalone.
Shirleen Davies has done it again! I have come to find that most sequels don't live up to the excitement of the first book but this one comes through and shines all on its own. Faster Than the Rest is one of those books that comes along and redefines the western/romance genre with its depth of characters and a plot that rivals many other top-rated best sellers. You don't need to read the first book in this series to understand what is going on in this one, but it does allow you to feel like you are in a "special club" and you know more than the next reader. That feeling of exclusivity is one of the author's inherent traits and it flows from her pen into every paragraph of this book. I found this book to be very well written and, to be honest, I couldn't really put it down and was almost devastated when my 's battery died. Of all the days to not have my charger with me! As good as this book is, I don't know how the author will top it. If you are looking for a thrilling and romantic story with a few twists thrown in for good measure, buy this book today and start reading. You won't be sorry.
I absolutely loved the first book in this series, and stayed up way past my bedtime reading it. And now I have done that again. I stayed up until 330 in the morning here and it took a long time before I was able to close my eyes. I just finished this wonderful sequel, and my mind was racing!
After finishing the Tougher Than The Rest, I was so in love with the main characters that I wasn't sure I would be able to adjust to new ones. But, I did very easily. Jamie MacLaren is just as interesting as his brother Niall was, and Victoria is even more so than Kate was. Oh, and Niall and Kate are in this one too, just not as much.
There is a big secret in this one that you will never guess. I had so many ideas as to what it was that I came up with as the story progressed, but they were all wrong. I was shocked! And then, there was another revelation in the middle, that had me going back to the beginning to re-read the first chapter to make sure I had my facts straight. At first, I thought that the first chapter seemed out of place, but it later made perfect sense. So, don't be put off by the randomness of it at first. I promise you will come back to it.
Anyway, I could ramble on all night about how great this book was. So get it yourself and I promise you will agree!
