I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this brilliant debut by Sri Lankan author Amanda Jay. I am a huge fan of science fiction and while 'The Other One' may not necessarily be considered sci-fi, it has a lot of elements of the sub genre 'Steampunk', such as Victorian era world-building, clockwork machines and sci-fi/fantasy elements. The world building here is excellent. We are thrust into an intriguing world where an entire city/civilization called Mliss is dependent on a fantastical power source and everyone worships a deity called the Two Faced God. Miss Jay explores the duality of human nature in this tale of grief and guilt. Everything in Mliss is dual in nature even reality itself. One of the main characters Tom, finds out he has a twin for the first time. He embarks on a mission to save the life of his father he never knew he had, in order to find out why he was abandoned in favor of his brother. His father Ezra Orson, has murdered someone. It seems somehow the machine he invented to help with the city's dwindling power supply may be the source of all his misfortune.Even though the characters are where The Other One excels, The plot moves along at a rapid pace as well and there is a great mystery at the heart of it. You keep turning the page to solve the mystery and find yourself blindsided by a brilliant twist that you do not see coming. Overall it is a page-turner that can be enjoyed equally by fans of science fiction as well casual readers.

I thought it was a very interesting book. Started slow but peeked my interest and am waiting for a sequel.
This was a little difficult to follow at first until I got use to the flow. The story was unusual and well told, if differently. Well done.
I absolutely loved the world created in The Other One, but what made the book enjoyable for me were the characters. It was nice to see character arcs that weren’t so black and white, and even the secondary characters were pretty well developed and as a result, I was really invested in the story.
The Other One isn’t a quick read. It’s one that takes a bit of investment and concentration, but in the end, it’s all worth it.
Amanda Jay’s story telling really pulls readers in and leaves them contemplating some of the bigger “what if’s” that people think about when they are faced with tough situations. The plot was well planned out, but for me, the highlight was the characters, and the way their relationships changed in worst of times.
Solid steampunk, and a fantastic debut.
I've been reading this over the past few days, and I absolutely love the worldbuilding. Rarely have I had the impression of such a detailed steampunk world in the background. The Clockwork City, with its history of seemingly avatar-ish god-kings and the seething underbelly - the last time I had this much fun imagining a city was with Dianna Wynne Jones' 'A Tale of Time City'. Amanda Jay is clearly a master in the making.
Not a bad debut. The writing style reminds me a little of The Golden Compass, and the world building was solid. I occasionally got lost at the beginning when switching between times, but once I became more familiar with the characters it wasn't too bad. There are some solid ideas in here and some good character development, though I couldn't quite reconcile why Ezra went behind his wife's (and love of his life) back so soon after they were married. I look forward to more from Jay.
I bought the version for two reasons - the book won the Fairway Literary Award, and I met the author at the Sri Lanka Comicon. Well, there is a reason number three - the version was rs 500 cheaper!
I actually read it to the end, because the characters drew you into their lives, hopes and fears. However, I am not a big fan of the style chosen by the author jumping back and forth in the timeline between character narratives gives me a headache. Although it is labelled 'steampunk' I was also glad that the technological aspects were actually kept to a minimum and there were no annoying info dumps littering the story.
I am in two minds about the finale - I like happy endings, but at the same time there was no real mystery as to who the existence of the Other One. The author had tried to give a twist at the end, but I was only partially convinced by it - some of the explanations at the end were just too convenient with people jumping in to help at the last minute.
Nevertheless, an enjoyable read.
